FAM46A contains 3 exons. The proximal promoter region contains a canonical TATA box.The deduced 437-amino acid protein has a calculated molecular mass of 49.2 kD. The 3-prime UTR of FAM46A contains AU-rich elements, suggesting the transcript may undergo rapid and selective decay.
Northern blot analysis detected abundant expression of a 5.6-kb transcript in adult ovary and fetal liver, lung, and brain. Weaker expression was detected in most other adult tissues examined, including heart, whereas expression was not detected in fetal heart. FAM46A was expressed weakly in neural retina, but not in retinal pigment epithelium or choroid. Database and zoo blot analyses suggested that FAM46A is conserved from yeast to human.
