ARL4A is similar to ARL4C and ARL4D and each has a nuclear localization signal and an unusually high guaninine nucleotide exchange rate. ARL4A is located in both the nuclear and extranuclear cell compartments. Multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene.murine Arl4 expression is highest at embryonic day 7 but greatly reduced by day 11. In situ hybridization analysis in embryonic mice detected expression at the 10-12 somite stage (day 8.5) at the forebrain-midbrain junction and at the 25-29 somite stage (day 9.5) at the junction of midbrain and hindbrain, suggesting a rostro-caudal expression pattern over time. In adult mice, expression was detected in the basal region of seminiferous tubules, including Sertoli cells, but not in Leydig cells.
