CDK5 Regulatory Subunit Associated Protein 1 Like Protein 1 (CDKAL1)

Threonylcarbamoyladenosine tRNA methylthiotransferase; tRNA-t(6)A37 methylthiotransferase

CDK5 Regulatory Subunit Associated Protein 1 Like Protein 1 (CDKAL1)
CDKAL1 is a member of the methylthiotransferase family. The function of this gene is not known. Genome-wide association studies have linked single nucleotide polymorphisms in an intron of this gene with susceptibility to type 2 diabetes.
Zeggini et al. (2007) stated that the CDKAL1 gene encodes a 579-residue, 65-kD protein that shares considerable domain and amino acid homology with CDK5RAP1, an inhibitor of CDK5 activation. They detected CDKAL1 mRNA in human pancreatic islet and skeletal muscle by RT-PCR. Using quantitative RT-PCR analysis of a panel of RNA samples from human tissues and cells, Scott et al. (2007) detected highest CDKAL1 expression in skeletal muscle and brain cells, as well as in 293T and HepG2 cells. The CDKAL1 gene maps to chromosome 6p22.3
