CMA; Chlormadinone Acetate; Clordion; Gestafortin; Lormin; Non-Ovlon; Normenon; Verton
Chlormadinone is a steroidal progestin which was never marketed. An acylated derivative, chlormadinone acetate, is widely used clinically used as a pharmaceutical drug. While chlormadinone is sometimes used as a synonym for chlormadinone acetate, what is almost always being referred to is actually chlormadinone acetate and not chlormadinone.
Chlormadinone acetate is a steroidal progestin with additional antiandrogen and antigonadotropic (and thus also antiestrogenic) effects. It is used clinically as a hormonal contraceptive, and in part due to its lowering of estrogen levels, but also for improved effectiveness in contraception, chlormadinone is frequently combined with ethinyl estradiol for this purpose. It is the acetate ester of chlormadinone.
