DNA Damage Inducible Transcript 4 Like Protein (DDIT4L)
Ellisen et al. (2002) identified REDD1 as a transcriptional target of p53 induced following DNA damage. They also identified a related human transcript that encodes a protein with 50% overall identity to REDD1, which they termed REDD2. Expression of REDD2 was only detectable by RT-PCR.
Reiling and Hafen (2004) found that simultaneous loss of Drosophila scylla and charybdis, which are homologs of the human REDD1 and REDD2 genes, generated flies that were more susceptible to hypoxia and that showed mild overgrowth. Conversely, overactivation of scylla and charybdis reduced growth. The authors showed that scylla and charybdis were induced by hypoxia.
