Dosage Suppressor Of Mck1 Homolog (DMC1)
DMC1 is essential for meiotic homologous recombination. Genetic recombination in meiosis plays an important role in generating diversity of genetic information. The product of this gene is structurally and evolutionary related to the products of the yeast RAD51 and E. coli RecA genes. Alternative splice variants of this gene have been described but their full-length nature has not been determined. The sequence of the 340-amino acid human protein is 54% identical to that of the yeast Dmc1 protein. DMC1 contains the 2 nucleotide-binding motifs and the single- and double-stranded DNA-binding sites that are conserved in the RecA-like protein family. The authors identified an alternatively spliced transcript, called DMC1-D, that encodes a 285-amino acid protein with a deletion between the nucleotide-binding motifs.
