Family With Sequence Similarity 127, Member A (FAM127A)
The CAAX motif, where A is an aliphatic residue, is found in proteins that are substrates for prenylation. Prenylation is a posttranslational modification that allows proteins lacking a transmembrane domain to be attached to the cell membrane or to other internal membranes. Many families of proteins contain this motif at their C terminus.
The deduced 209-amino acid CXX1 protein has a CVLA sequence, which conforms to the CAAX motif, at its C terminus. Northern blot analysis detected an approximately 1.35-kb CXX1 transcript in all human tissues examined. The authors identified a putative expressed CXX1 pseudogene, which they named CXX1b, and a putative unexpressed CXX1 pseudogene, which they named CXX1c.
