Using exon trapping to identify genes in the critical region for keratolytic winter erythema (KWE) on chromosome 8, followed by RT-PCR, Appel et al. (2002) cloned C8ORF13. The deduced 214-amino acid protein shares sequence similarity with the human SEC protein. RT-PCR detected expression of C8ORF13 in skin, spleen, kidney, leukocytes, testis, lung, small intestine, and prostate, but not in heart, brain, liver, ovary, or skeletal muscle. Expression was also detected in HeLa cells and primary keratinocytes.Appel et al. (2002) determined that the C8ORF13 gene contains 3 exons.During the construction of a physical and transcriptional map of the critical region of chromosome 8 for KWE, Appel et al. (2002) mapped the C8ORF13 gene to chromosome 8p23-p22.
