FtsJ Homolog 3 (FTSJ3)

pre-rRNA processing protein FTSJ3; 2'-O-ribose RNA methyltransferase SPB1 homolog; Putative rRNA methyltransferase 3

FtsJ Homolog 3 (FTSJ3)
Although the function of this gene is not known, the existence of FTSJ3 is supported by mRNA and EST data. A possible function of the encoded protein can be inferred from amino acid sequence similarity to the E.coli FtsJ protein and to a mouse protein possibly involved in embryogenesis.
RrmJ (FtsJ) is a well conserved heat shock protein present in prokaryotes, archaea, and eukaryotes. RrmJ is responsible for methylating 23 S rRNA at position U2552 in the aminoacyl (A)1-site of the ribosome. U2552 is one of the five universally conserved A-loop residues and has been shown to be methylated at the ribose 2'-OH group in the majority of organisms investigated so far. This suggests that this modification plays an important role in the A-loop function.
