Gliomedin (GLDN)
Gliomedin accumulated at the ends of each myelin segment during development, where it aligned with the forming nodes. The deduced 47.5-kD protein contains a leader sequence, 2 N-terminal collagen domains, and a large C-terminal olfactomedin domain. PCR analysis detected mouse Crgl2 primarily in testis and skeletal muscle, with lower levels in a range of adult tissues and embryonic mice at various developmental stages. Human CRGL2 was detected only in placenta. RT-PCR and Southern blot analysis detected CRGL2 in all 5 human hepatocellular carcinomas examined, but it was undetectable in normal liver. In situ hybridization indicated that CRGL2 mRNA was upregulated in hepatocytes throughout the tumor and in preneoplastic foci.
