Insulin Like Growth Factor Binding Protein 1 (IGFBP1)

IGFBP1 is a member of the insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP) family ,a protein with an IGFBP domain and a thyroglobulin type-I domain. IGFBP-1 has been shown to modify the short-term effects of IGFs. Acute and chronic elevations in plasma insulin suppress the hepatic production and the circulating level of IGFBP-1, which, in turn, serve to increase the bioavailability of free IGF-I.
There is growing evidence that IGFBP-1 and the IGF/IGFBP system may form an important link between the development of hyperinsulinemia/insulin resistance and the development of cardiovascular disease. In the circulation, IGFBP-1 may prevent the adverse IGF-mediated remodeling effect on the vasculature.
