Intraflagellar Transport Protein 57 (IFT57)
The C terminus shows weak similarity to some cytoskeletal proteins such as the Rho-associated kinase ROCK2. HIPPI mRNA is expressed in the brain. It is present in all regions of the brain, and to a lesser extent in spinal cord. It is also expressed abundantly in heart, kidney, and lung, with weaker expression in all other tissues tested. HIPPI is expressed in the Golgi apparatus of neurons where it partly colocalizes with HIP1. Immunohistochemical studies in mice revealed that HIPPI is present in neurons and neuropil throughout the brain. Within the Golgi, HIPPI was found on the outside of cisternae and mostly in the cis-Golgi. This observation was confirmed in human neuronal NT2 cells. HIPPI was found to be expressed in cortico-striatal and striato-pallidal projection neurons.
