Keratin 24 (KRT24)
As part of a search for the gene mutant in Naegeli syndrome, Sprecher et al. (2002) identified the KRT24 gene on chromosome 17q11.2. The KRT24 gene encodes a protein of 525 amino acids that bears approximately 60% identity to several type I keratins, in particular across the conserved alpha-helical rod segment, and seems most closely related to KRT10. By RT-PCR, the authors detected high KRT24 expression in keratinocytes, placenta, colon, and spleen, and less abundant expression in thymus and testis.Sprecher et al. (2002) determined that the KRT24 gene spans 5.7 kb and contains 8 exons.Sprecher et al. (2002) placed the KRT24 gene on chromosome 17q11.2 by BLAST analysis.Sprecher et al. (2002) excluded the KRT24 gene as the site of mutations causing Naegeli syndrome.
