Meis Homeobox Protein 1 (MEIS1)
Homeobox genes, of which the most well-characterized category is represented by the HOX genes, play a crucial role in normal development. In addition, several homeoproteins are involved in neoplasia. This gene encodes a homeobox protein belonging to the TALE ('three amino acid loop extension') family of homeodomain-containing proteins.
MEIS1 encodes a novel homeobox protein belonging to the TALE (three amino acid loop extension) family of homeodomain-containing proteins. The homeodomain of MEIS1 is the only conserved motif within the entire 390-amino acid protein. Meis1 regulates Pbx1 activity by promoting nuclear import of the Pbx1 protein.
