A number sign is used with this entry because of evidence that susceptibility to vitiligo, like a number of other autoimmune disorders, is associated with more than 1 gene. Loci for susceptibility to autoimmune disease, particularly vitiligo, have been mapped to chromosomes 17p13 (VAMAS1), 1p31 (AIS1), 7 (AIS2), 8 (AIS3), and 4 (AIS4).

By quantitative RT-PCR of mRNA isolated from skin biopsies, Kingo et al. (2006) demonstrated significantly increased mRNA levels of C12ORF10, the human homolog of mouse Myg1, in both the lesional and nonlesional skin of patients with vitiligo compared to healthy control subjects.Kingo et al. (2006) stated that the C12ORF10 gene maps to chromosome 12q13.
