Mitochondrial Ribosomal Protein S21 (MRPS21)

S21mt; 28S ribosomal protein S21, mitochondrial

Mitochondrial Ribosomal Protein S21 (MRPS21)
MRPS21 encodes a 28S subunit protein that belongs to the ribosomal protein S21P family. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are found on chromosomes 1p, 1q, 9p, 10p, 10q, 16q, and 17q. Available sequence data analyses identified splice variants that differ in the 5' UTR; both transcripts encode the same protein.
MRPS21 is 1 of more than 70 protein components of mitochondrial ribosomes that are encoded by the nuclear genome. The deduced 87-amino acid MRPS21 protein has a calculated molecular mass of 10.7 kD. MRPS21 orthologs in mouse, Drosophila, C. elegans, yeast, and E. coli. Highest conservation is in the N-terminal and central regions of MRPS21 orthologs. Mouse and human MRPS21 share 90.8% amino acid identity.
