Myotubularin Related Protein 6 (MTMR6)

Mutations in the myotubularin (MTM1) dual-specific phosphatase gene cause X-linked myotubular myopathy. By searching an EST database for sequences related to MTM1, Laporte et al. (1998) identified a partial MTMR6 (myotubularin-related protein-6) cDNA and cDNAs encoding 3 other novel members of the myotubularin protein family.

Sequence comparisons of the predicted protein-tyrosine phosphatase/dual-specificity phosphatase region of myotubularin family members indicated that MTMR6, MTMR7, a Drosophila gene, and a nematode gene form a distinct subgroup. Northern blot analysis revealed that the 4.8-kb MTMR6 mRNA is expressed ubiquitously.
