Nicolin 1 (NICN1)

NPCEDRG; PGs5; Tubulin polyglutamylase complex subunit 5

Nicolin 1 (NICN1)
NICN1 localizes to the nucleus and is expressed in numerous tissues including brain, testis, liver, and kidney. This refseq contains genomic sequence in its 3' UTR which is not supported by experimental evidence. The deduced 213-amino acid protein has a calculated molecular mass of 24 kD and shares 89% amino acid identity with its mouse ortholog. EST database analysis identified homologous sequences in mammalian species only. Northern blot analysis of human tissues detected a 2.5-kb transcript with high expression in brain, testis, liver, and kidney, moderate expression in heart, skeletal muscle, placenta, pancreas, and lung. Low expression was detected in peripheral blood leukocytes, spleen, thymus, small intestine, and colon. Confocal laser microscopy localized NICN1 to the nucleus, although a nuclear localization signal was not identified in the sequence.
