The deduced protein contains 360 amino acids and has 9 transmembrane domains. Northern blot analysis detected a 2.4-kb transcript in all tissues examined, with highest expression in placenta. NIPA2 shares significant identity with all vertebrate homologs analyzed, with the most divergence found in the C terminus.
Chai et al. (2003) also cloned mouse Nipa2, which encodes a deduced protein of 359 amino acids that is 96% identical to human NIPA2. Unlike human NIPA2, which has 1 polyadenylation site, mouse Nipa2 utilizes 2 alternative polyadenylation sites in the 3-prime untranslated region. Northern blot analysis of mouse tissues detected transcripts of 1.9 and 3.2 kb that showed highest expression in placenta.
