Nuclear Factor, Erythroid Derived 2 Like Protein 1 (NFE2L1)
The promoters of eukaryotic protein-encoding genes contain short cis-acting elements that are binding sites for sequence-specific DNA-binding proteins involved in the regulation of gene transcription.
The structure of the derived protein and other evidence identified TCF11 as a member of the bZIP family of transcription factors. The predicted gene product showed a high degree of similarity to p45 NF-E2 (NFE2), the hematopoietic cell-specific 45-kD subunit of the human globin locus control region-binding protein NF-E2. These 2 proteins showed regions of remarkable homology to 2 invertebrate proteins, CNC and skn-1, postulated to regulate embryonic development in Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans, respectively.
