Osteomodulin (OMD)

OSAD; SLRR2C; Osteoadherin; Keratan sulfate proteoglycan osteomodulin

Osteomodulin (OMD)
Osteomodulinis identical with osteoadherin, which has been isolated as a small cell-binding keratan sulfate proteoglycan from bovine bone. The protein is secreted by osteoblasts. Buchaille et al (2000) have reported that osteomodulin is expressed in mature human odontoblasts and ameloblasts.
Osteomodulin binds to hydroxyapatite and is as efficient as fibronectin in promoting osteoblast attachment in vitro. (Wendel et al, 1998). Rehn et al (2008) have reported that overexpression of OSAD in osteoblasts results in an increase of osteoblast differentiation features, increases in vitro mineralization, and reduces proliferation and migration. Repression of OSAD expression increases cell proliferation and migration.
