PTPN13 Like Protein, Y-Linked (PRY)

PTPN13LY; PRY1; PRY2; Testis-specific PTP-BL-related Y protein

PTPN13 Like Protein, Y-Linked (PRY)
PRY is located in the nonrecombining portion of the Y chromosome, and expressed specifically in testis. It encodes a protein which has a low degree of similarity to protein tyrosine phosphatase, non-receptor type 13. Two nearly identical copies of this gene exist within a palindromic region. This record represents the more centromeric copy. Transcripts from 2 of these genes, TTY1 (testis transcript on Y chromosome, gene 1) and TTY2, do not contain a significant open reading frame. A third gene, PRY (PTPBL-related protein on Y), encodes a protein that shares some similarity to the mouse protein tyrosine phosphatase PTPBL, a homolog of human PTPN13. The authors speculated that the selective advantage conferred by the NRY's retention and amplification of male fertility factors accounts for the multitude of testis-specific gene families there.
