Polypeptide-N-Acetylgalactosaminyltransferase Like Protein 5 (GALNTL5)

GALNTL5, Belongs to the glycosyltransferase 2 family. GalNAc-T subfamily. Expressed in testis.May catalyze the initial reaction in O-linked oligosaccharide biosynthesis, the transfer of an N-acetyl-D-galactosamine residue to a serine or threonine residue on the protein receptor.

There are two conserved domains in the glycosyltransferase region: the N-terminal domain, which is probably involved in manganese coordination and substrate binding and the C-terminal domain, which is probably involved in catalytic reaction and UDP-Gal binding. In contrast to other members of the family, it lacks the C-terminal ricin B-type lectin domain, which contributes to the glycopeptide specificity. Its precise function is therefore unsure.
