Potassium Voltage Gated Channel Subfamily G, Member 4 (KCNG4)

KCNG4 encodes a member of the potassium channel, voltage-gated, subfamily G. This member functions as a modulatory subunit. The gene has strong expression in brain. Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been found in normal and cancerous tissues. The deduced 519-amino acid protein shows a topology typical of Kv subunits, with 6 transmembrane segments (S1 to S6) and a potassium-selective motif, GYG, in the P loop between S5 and S6. KCNG4 shares more than 70% sequence identity with Kv6.1 (KCNG1) and Kv6.2 (KCNG2). PCR analysis detected strongest expression in brain and lower expression in liver, small intestine, and colon.KCNG4 was retained in the endoplasmic reticulum when expressed alone, and it was redistributed to the plasma membrane when coexpressed with Kv2.1.
