SET And MYND Domain Containing Protein 1 (SMYD1)
Hwang and Gottlieb (1995) identified the mouse Bop gene as a promoter activity directing transcription opposite to that of the CD8b gene. They found that Bop was expressed in cytotoxic T cells and adult heart and skeletal muscle.
Gottlieb et al. (2002) showed that Bop is expressed specifically in cardiac and skeletal muscle precursors and in cardiomyocytes throughout chick and mouse development, beginning before cardiac differentiation. Bop encodes a protein containing MYND and SET domains, which regulate transcription by mediating distinct chromatin modifications. Gottlieb et al. (2002) showed that Bop expressed in adult skeletal muscle is a histone deacetylase-dependent transcriptional repressor.
