Simvastatin (SM)
Simvastatinis a hypolipidemic drug used with exercise, diet, and weight-loss to control elevated cholesterol, or hypercholesterolemia. It is a member of the statin class of pharmaceuticals. Simvastatin is a synthetic derivative of a fermentation product of Aspergillus terreus. Simvastatin is contraindicated with pregnancy, breast feeding and liver disease. Pregnancy must be avoided while on simvastatin due to potentially severe birth defects. Patients cannot breast feed while on simvastatin due to potentially disrupting the infant's lipid metabolism.
Simvastatin is also contraindicated with Amlodipine and should not exceed a dosage greater than 20 mg/day when taken alongside Amlodipine. Simvastatin is a powerful lipid-lowering drug that can decrease low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels by up to 50%.
