Six Transmembrane Epithelial Antigen Of The Prostate 1 (STEAP1)
STEAP1 is predominantly expressed in prostate tissue, and is found to be upregulated in multiple cancer cell lines. The gene product is predicted to be a six-transmembrane protein, and was shown to be a cell surface antigen significantly expressed at cell-cell junctions.One novel gene that was highly expressed in advanced prostate cancer encoded a 339-amino acid protein with 6 potential membrane-spanning regions flanked by hydrophilic N- and C-terminal domains. This structure suggested a potential function as a channel or transporter protein. This gene, named STEAP for 'six-transmembrane epithelial antigen of the prostate,' was expressed predominantly in human prostate tissue and was upregulated in multiple cancer cell lines, including prostate, bladder, colon, ovarian, and Ewing sarcoma.
