Sodium/Glucose Cotransporter 3 (SGLT3)
Glucose transporters are integral membrane proteins that mediate the transport of glucose and structurally-related substances across cellular membranes. Two families of glucose transporter have been identified: the facilitated diffusion glucose transporter family, also known as 'uniporters,' and the sodium-dependent glucose transporter family. In mouse, the SLC5A4 gene is duplicated to produce two apparently functional genes in a head-to-tail orientation, with fragments of intervening Slc5a4-related sequence. The genes were equally divergent from each other and from human SLC5A4, showing about 70% sequence identity. The single human SLC5A4 gene is flanked by inverted repeats, each composed of an immunoglobulin lambda light chain (IGL)-related sequence and a gene closely related to RFP.
