Solute Carrier Family 25, Member 18 (SLC25A18)

The SLC25 gene family encodes mitochondrial carriers that transport a variety of metabolites across the inner mitochondrial membrane.

SLC25A18, also known as GC2, is 1 of 2 mitochondrial glutamate/H+ symporters, the other being SLC25A22.The human SLC25A18 gene encodes a protein of 315 amino acids that is 87% identical to its mouse homolog and 63% identical to the protein sequence of SLC25A22. Purified SLC25A18 protein had an apparent molecular mass of 31.5 kD. Strongest expression in adult human brain, with less expression in testis and weak expression in other tissues. SLC25A18 as well as SLC25A22 catalyze both the unidirectional transport of glutamate and the glutamate/glutamate exchange.
