GC1; NET44; Glutamate/H(+) symporter 1; Mitochondrial glutamate carrier 1

Solute Carrier Family 25, Member 22 (SLC25A22)
The SLC25 gene family encodes mitochondrial carriers that transport a variety of metabolites across the inner mitochondrial membrane. SLC25A22, also known as GC1, is 1 of the 2 mitochondrial glutamate/H+ symporters, the other being SLC25A18.
The human SLC25A22 gene encodes a protein of 323 amino acids that is 95% identical to its mouse homolog and 63% identical to the protein sequence of SLC25A18. Purified SLC25A22 protein had an apparent molecular mass of 32.8 kD.The SLC25A22 protein catalyzes either the cotransport of L-glutamate with H+ or its exchange with OH-.SLC25A22 expression in areas of the brain proposed to contribute to the genesis and control of myoclonic seizures.
