Mitoferrin 2 (MFRN2)

The SLC25A28 gene encodes a 364-amino acid protein that contains 6 transmembrane domains, 3 mitochondrial energy transfer protein signatures, and 2 prokaryotic membrane lipoprotein attachment sites.

The SLC25A28 protein shows 37% and 38% identity with yeast MRS3 and MRS4 proteins, respectively. RT-PCR and EST analysis also identified a 177-amino acid SLC25A28 splice variant identical to the C terminus of full-length SLC25A28. ESTs and RT-PCR products corresponding to both SLC25A28 splice variants were found in man, mouse, and cow. Northern blot analysis showed ubiquitous expression of a 1.8-kb SLC25A28 transcript, with highest expression in heart, skeletal muscle, and liver.
