Adenine Nucleotide Translocator 4, Mitochondrial (ANT4)
Mitochondrial ADP/ATP carriers, such as SLC25A31, are nuclear-coded mitochondrial proteins that catalyze the exchange of ATP generated in mitochondria by ATP synthase against ADP produced in cytosol by most energy-consuming reactions.By searching databases for sequences similar to AAC1 (SLC25A4), Dolce et al. (2005) identified SLC25A31, which they called AAC4. The deduced 315-amino acid protein contains some residues conserved in AAC proteins, including residues implicated in cytosolic ADP binding, but it lacks several conserved charged residues. Real-time PCR detected highest SLC25A31 expression in testis, with lower levels in liver and brain; expression was not detected in other tissues examined. Fluorescence-tagged SLC25A31 localized to mitochondria in Chinese hamster ovary cells.
