Sodium/Calcium Exchanger 2 (NCX2)

This exchanger was more than 60% similar to NCX1 and thus was termed Ncx2. The rat gene predicts a protein of 921 amino acids. The 5-kb transcript was detected in rat brain and skeletal muscle. expression of the rat Ncx2 cDNA produced functional sodium and calcium exchange.

The deduced full-length protein contains 952 amino acids and shares 97% identity with the rat Ncx2 precursor. RT-PCR ELISA detected intermediate expression in adult brain, with lower levels in fetal brain, adult pancreas, testis, and ovary. Little to no expression was detected in all other organs and tissues examined. Within specific adult brain regions, expression was highest in amygdala, cerebellum, and caudate nucleus, with intermediate levels in all other regions examined.
