Stomatin Like Protein 1 (STOML1)
The deduced 394-amino acid protein contains a putative N-terminal transmembrane helix and a C-terminal sequence similar to nonspecific lipid transfer proteins. A cysteine residue N-terminal to the transmembrane region may be palmitoylated. Within a central 149-amino acid stretch, STOML1 shares 40% identity with stomatin. EST database analysis identified a possible splice variant produced by exon skipping. Northern blot analysis detected a 2.2-kb transcript expressed in several tissues, with highest levels in brain, heart, and skeletal muscle. Expression was also detected in all specific brain regions examined. The deduced 398-amino acid protein has a calculated molecular mass of 45 kD and contains several putative phosphorylation sites.
