T-Box Protein 22 (TBX22)

TBOX22; T-box transcription factor TBX22

T-Box Protein 22 (TBX22)
TBX22 is a member of a phylogenetically conserved family of genes that share a common DNA-binding domain, the T-box. T-box genes encode transcription factors involved in the regulation of developmental processes. Mutations in this gene have been associated with the inherited X-linked disorder, Cleft palate with ankyloglossia, and it is believed to play a major role in human palatogenesis.TBX22 is expressed in the palatal shelves and is highest prior to elevation to a horizontal position above the tongue. TBX22 mRNA was also detected in the base of the tongue in the region of the frenulum that corresponds to the ankyloglossia seen in CPX patients. The authors identified the orthologous mouse Tbx22 gene, and documented a similar expression pattern in E12.5-E17.5 mouse embryos.
