Tetracycline Transporter Like Protein (TETRAN)

Using exon amplification to isolate genes from the Huntington disease (HD) region on chromosome 4, followed by screening a frontal cortex cDNA library, Duyao et al. (1993) cloned TETRAN, which they called IT10C3A. The predicted 455-amino acid protein has a calculated molecular mass of 48 kD. It contains 12 transmembrane domains and shares significant similarity with the tetracycline efflux proteins of E. coli. Northern blot analysis detected a 2-kb transcript in human lymphoblasts and brain.

By screening yeast for genes whose overexpression conferred resistance the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) indomethacin, Mima et al. (2007) identified Tpo1. They identified human TETRAN as an ortholog of Tpo1 by database analysis.
