Tubulin Tyrosine Ligase Like Protein 6 (TTLL6)

TTL.6; Tubulin polyglutamylase TTLL6

Tubulin Tyrosine Ligase Like Protein 6 (TTLL6)
Chen et al. (2006) noted that TTLL6 contains a TTL domain. By EST database analysis, Chen et al. (2006) reported that TTLL6 has 5 potential splice variants and that it shows high expression in testis and low expression in stomach and brain. In the model protist Tetrahymena thermophila, Janke et al. (2005) characterized 2 conserved types of polyglutamylases that differed in substrate preference and subcellular localizations. They demonstrated that the neuronal TTLL1 is a tubulin polyglutamylase catalytic component with a preference for alpha-tubulin and that TTLL6 is a polyglutamylase with a preference for beta-tubulin. Phylogenetic association of the TTLL6, TTLL1, TTLL9, TTLL4, TTLL5, and TTLL15 protein groups suggested that all of these proteins are important for glutamylation of tubulin or possibly nucleosome assembly proteins.
