Ubiquitin Like Protein 5 (UBL5)

Ubiquitin Like Protein 5 (UBL5)
UBL5, however, lacks glycine residues at its C terminus. The deduced 73-amino acid protein has a structure like ubiquitin but is shorter than ubiquitin and the other UBLs and lacks the C-terminal diglycine motif required for conjugation of ubiquitin to its target protein.
Northern blot analysis revealed ubiquitous expression of a 0.6-kb transcript that was highest in heart, muscle, kidney, liver, iris, and lymphoblast tissues. Western blot analysis showed expression of a 9-kD protein that failed to associate covalently with other proteins. Fluorescence microscopy demonstrated a cytoplasmic localization distinct from that of ubiquitin or of the primarily nuclear UBLs, NEDD8 and SUMO1 (UBL1).
