Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), also known as intracranial injury, occurs when an external force traumatically injures the brain. TBI is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the world, the most common of which occur in children. The causes of TBI include the following major categories: direct contusion of the brainfrom the skull, indirect contusion from the side opposite the impact, shearing/stretching of thebrain tissue due to motion of the structures within the skull and each other, and vascular response to the impact. Models for Traumatic Brain Injury are currently being used to research and clarify the confusions around human injuries and to identify potential protectivemeasures and/or preventative therapies fortraumatic brain injury of all severities and causes.
