Alanine Glyoxylate Aminotransferase 2 (AGXT2)

AGT2; Beta-Alanine-Pyruvate Aminotransferase; (R)-3-amino-2-methylpropionate--pyruvate transaminase

Alanine Glyoxylate Aminotransferase 2 (AGXT2)
AGXT2 encodes the mitochondrial alanine-glyoxylate aminotransferase, which catalyzes the conversion of glyoxylate to glycine using L-alanine as the amino donor. The deduced 512-amino acid rat Agxt2 enzyme has a predicted 39-amino acid precursor leader sequence and has a calculated molecular mass of 57.15 kD. Rat Agxt2 shares 29.2% identity with rat ornithine aminotransferase (OAT1) but has little similarity to rat mitochondrial Agt1 or to human peroxisomal Agt1 (AGXT).Enzyme activity assay detected alanine-glyoxylate aminotransferase and glycolate reductase activity in purified mitochondria of liver carcinoma cells, and beta-ALAAT II activity was enriched in mitochondria, suggesting that human hepatocyte mitochondria possess AGXT2 activity.
