Cluster Of Differentiation 164 (CD164)

CD164 is a transmembrane isoform of the mucin-like glycoprotein MGC-24. MGC-24 is a 24 kDa protein rich in hydroxyl amino acids and cysteine, and lack repeating motifs identified originally in human gastric carcinoma cells as a protein binding peanut agglutinin. High levels of MGC-24 mRNA are expressed in normal tissues of the colon, small intestine and thyroid, and in some nude mouse-transplanted colorectal and pancreatic adenocarcinomas.

Kurosawa et al (1999) have reported that in the mouse only the transmembrane form is expressed in many organs. CD164 is expressed by human CD34(+) hematopoietic progenitor cells. The subpopulations of CD34(+) cells expressing CD164 include the majority of CFU-GM, BFU-E, and hierarchically more primitive precursors (pre-CFU). .
