Engulfment And Cell Motility 2 (ELMO2)

Engulfment and cell motility protein 2 interacts with the dedicator of cyto-kinesis 1 protein. Similarity to a C. elegans protein suggests that this protein may function in phagocytosis of apoptotic cells and in cell migration. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein.

Katoh and Negishi (2003) demonstrated that RHO G interacts directly with ELMO2 in a GTP-dependent manner and forms a ternary complex with DOCK180 to induce activation of RAC1. The RHO G-ELMO2-DOCK180 pathway is required for activation of RAC1 and cell spreading mediated by integrin, as well as for neurite outgrowth induced by nerve growth factor.
