G-Elongation Factor, Mitochondrial 2 (GFM2)
G-Elongation Factor,Mitochondrial 2 encodes one of mitochondrial translation elongation factors. Its role in the regulation of normal mitochondrial function and in different disease states attributed to mitochondrial dysfunction is not known. Alternative splicing results in at least three transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms. The human EFG2 protein shows significant homology to several bacterial Efg proteins. Multiple alignments demonstrated a novel gene family of mitochondrial EFG proteins that could be divided into 2 subgroups, EFG1 and EFG2, in several eukaryotic species, including S. pombe, C. elegans, and Drosophila. Northern blot analysis detected ubiquitous expression of a major 3.2-kb EFG2 transcript. The highest level of expression was detected in fetal liver and adult heart, liver, skeletal muscle, and kidney.
