General Transcription Factor IIF, Polypeptide 1 (GTF2F1)

Transcription factor II F (TFIIF) is one of several general transcription factors that make up the RNA polymerase II preinitiation complex.Transcription Factor II F is encoded by the GTF2F1, GTF2F2, and GTF2F2L genes.DNA is thought to be wrapped one complete turn around the preinitiation complex and it is TFIIF that helps keep this tight wrapping. In the process, the torsional strain on the DNA may aid in DNA melting at the promoter, forming the transcription bubble. Of all the general transcription factors, TFIIF is the most similar to bacterial sigma factor.

At least 6 chromatographically resolvable general transcription factors may participate in accurate initiation by RNA polymerase II in HeLa cell-derived systems.
