The deduced alpha and beta isoforms contain 213 and 880 amino acids, respectively, and share the first 186 amino acids. The last 27 amino acids of GAR17-alpha differ from the corresponding GAR17-beta residues due to a frameshift introduced by alternative splicing. Both isoforms contain a calponin homology (CH) domain, and the beta isoform also contains a GAS2-related (GAR) domain and an unstructured C-terminal tail (CT17) sequence. GAR17-beta shares 56% amino acid similarity with GAR22-beta over the first 337 amino acids with 62% identity over the CH domains and 75% identity over the GAR domains. Northern blot analysis of human tissues detected GAR17 expression exclusively in skeletal muscle. RT-PCR analysis distinguished between the 2 isoforms and detected predominant expression of GAR17-beta.
