High Mobility Group Nucleosome Binding Domain Protein 5 (HMGN5)

NSBP1; Nucleosomal Binding Protein 1

High Mobility Group Nucleosome Binding Domain Protein 5 (HMGN5)
HMGN5 is a nuclear protein with similarities to the high mobility group proteins, HMG14 and HMG17, which suggests that this protein may function as a nucleosomal binding and transcriptional activating protein. The full-length NSBP1 cDNA encodes a 282-amino acid polypeptide that shares 86% sequence similarity with the mouse protein. Like HMG14 and HMG17, the mouse and human proteins have positively charged N-terminal domains and negatively charged C-terminal domains as well as 2 highly conserved motifs in the N terminus: a nuclear localization signal and an HMG14/HMG17 signature in a nucleosomal binding domain. The human and mouse proteins differ from each other in the length and composition of the C terminus, which is associated with transcriptional activation in the mouse.
