High Mobility Group Protein 2 Like Protein 1 (HMG2L1)

High mobility group (HMG) proteins are nonhistone chromosomal proteins. Seroussi et al. (1999) characterized a 190.3-kb contig in human 22q13.1 and identified the HMG2L1 and TOM1 genes, as well as the previously identified HMOX1 and MCM5 genes. (A gene designated THC211630 was later determined to be the same as HMG2L1. The order of these genes is cen--HMG2L1--TOM1--HMOX1--MCM5--tel. All are oriented in a 5-prime to 3-prime direction from centromere to telomere. The HMG2L1 gene contains 6 exons. The predicted HMG2L1 protein has an HMG box that shares 39% amino acid sequence identity with the HMG box of bovine HMG2.
