Meniscus Chondrocytes

Meniscus Fibrochondrocytes (MFCs)

In the inner and middle part of the meniscus (the avascular zone), the main cell type has a round or oval shape and the cells have been termed Meniscus fibrochondrocytes (MFCs).Meniscus fibrochondrocytes (MFCs) are an important cell population responsible for regulating the biomechanical properties of the knee meniscus. MFCs function by tailoring the synthesis and assembly of the extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in response to changes in the mechanical loading regimen of the joint. MFCs are exposed to a heterogeneous environment of mechanical stressors that each lead to different responses in the cells.
