Multiple EGF Like Domains Protein 6 (MEGF6)
The domain that characterizes epidermal growth factor (EGF) consists of approximately 50 amino acids with 3 disulfide bonds. EGF-like domains are believed to play a critical role in a number of extracellular events, including cell adhesion and receptor-ligand interactions. Proteins with EGF-like domains often consist of more than 1,000 amino acids, have multiple copies of the EGF-like domain, and contain additional domains known to be involved in specific protein-protein interactions. The predicted Megf6 protein contains a signal sequence and 30 EGF-like domains, 3 of which are a calcium-binding type and 23 of which contain 2 additional cysteine residues within the consensus EGF-like motif. The N-terminal portion of Megf6 shows significant sequence similarity to fibrillin. Northern blot analysis detected Megf6 expression in rat lung.
