Polo Like Kinase 1 Substrate 1 (PLK1S1)
A functional bipolar spindle is indispensible for the accurate segregation of chromosomes at mitosis. The centrosomal protein and polo-like kinase-1 (Plk1) substrate Kizuna (Kiz), has now been shown to have a novel function in maintaining spindle-pole integrity and spindle bipolarity.
Kizuna means 'bonds' in Japanese. Phosphorylation at Thr-379 by PLK1 is not needed for centrosomal localization or pericentriolar material expansion but is indispensable for spindle-pole stabilization.Centrosomal protein required for establishing a robust mitotic centrosome architecture that can endure the forces that converge on the centrosomes during spindle formation. Required for stabilizing the expanded pericentriolar material around the centriole.
